History

Environmental Working Group has existed before in AEGEE history, in fact it was the very second working group of AEGEE, founded in 1990 just after East-West Working Group. Environmental Weeks in different parts of Europe were held in 1991, 1992 and 1993, plus several environmental congresses, academies and conferences throughout the 90s. But as it seems that at some point there were not enough enhtusiasts able to keep the working group alive and it faded.

At the Agora in Poznan in Novemer 1999 the environmental working group was closed down due to a lack of active members.

In Spring Agora 2005 Enschede a few members of AEGEE-Tartu and AEGEE-Nijmegen, after seeing the capacity of AEGEE and imageing what kind of impacts can be achieved through it, had the idea of creating Environmental Working Group (knowing only that there had been some attempts to do that in the past). Starting off quietly, creating awerness and gathering feedback from the members of the network, we held workshops in Agora Warszawa and Napoli in 2006 about environment’s place in AEGEE.

The final push to create Environmental Working Group was given during the new year event 2006/2007 „Freezing Hot New Year in wild Estonian Nature”, where besides hiking, parties and workshops also some open discussions were held. Organisers found more people interested in their goal and it was decided to meet again in spring in Brussels to become officially a working group. And so 2 years later, in Spring Agora Valletta EnWG is about to become reality, again.

At the Spring Agora in Valletta in 2007 the network voted in favour for the establishing of the new Environmental Working Group.
