Restructuring the AEGEE server Environment

A short while ago, the AEGEE IT-administration group decided to make some changes at the server-structure of the AEGEE Network. Plans include to close the TERMINIX-Server in Brussels and use it to take over the work of the old ZEUS-Server in Enschede. The released capacity of the old ZEUS server could be used to establish a test environment for future software-development.

Until recently the ITWG had made attempts to install a Terminal Server, codename: TERMINIX, at the headquarters in Brussels. The aim was to replace the desktop PCs in the HQ with Thin-Clients. This project started in 2003, but is still not working till the day of today. Hence the IT-administration group decided to close the TERMINIX-project and use the released capacities at another point.

The ZEUS-Server in Enschede is currently one of the two most important web servers inside the AEGEE-Sever structure (the other one is KARL in Aachen). Unfortunately it is becoming rather old and does not fulfil the actual requirements any more. So what is closer to replace the old ZEUS-server by the current TERMINIX? For the ordinary aegee.org user this leads to a more convenient web experience when surfing the WG-portal and WG-websites, the photo pages and especially the pages of
the commissions. Furthermore this enables the ITWG to offer some webspace to fresh locals who can not afford commercial webspace, yet. On its turn, the current ZEUS-Server will be most likely turned over into a test-server for future ITWG-software development. We hope by taking this step, to simplify the possibilities of improving the aegee.org environment and minimize the risk for the running environment, when doing so.
